Lamar High School Tennis Team Captain
"Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships" -Michael Jordan
Hard work, Humility, and Unexpected Rewards
My time with the Lamar High School Tennis Team will be something I will always cherish. I credit a large portion of my character to the lessons I learned from my coaches, teammates, and both internal and external battles on the court. The beginning of my time with the team started with a bitter taste in my mouth. I was just cut from the basketball team and was only looking for something to fill my time. From the very beginning, I noticed a difference in culture. The team built each other up instead of tearing one another down and the coaches seemed to care more in comparison to my last team experience.

From there, I bought into the team and used my strong work ethic to climb the rankings rapidly. After hours of hard work, tennis camps, and studying professional players' games, I finally felt a breakthrough in summer tryouts the following year. I went from the 2nd ranking on junior varsity to the 2nd ranking on the varsity team. Although the team's season resulted in a mediocre finish, my hunger for greatness was established.

To begin my senior season, I was elected to be captain of the team. I felt lots of pride in this. This was my largest leadership position to date and I wanted to make sure to make the most of it. Before and during the season, I worked with the coaches to try to prepare the team as best as possible for the upcoming opponents. Our team ended up winning the third district title in school history and we were also bi-regional champions. I will never forget the surreal feeling of leading the team to the victory we had all desired so much.

All in all, I am grateful for my high school tennis career for instilling me with a strong work ethic and the victories on the court, but I am more grateful for the friendships (that I still keep up with today) I made from it and the fun-filled memories with the team.
